The Republic
of Malta is an independant European state since its independance from Great Britain
in (September) 1974 although remaining a member of the Commonwealth of Nations
(previously the British Commonwealth), becoming a democratic republic in December
of the same year and joining the European Union on Mayday 2004. Malta consists
of three inhabited islands and a further four uninhabited islands. Having its
own official language Malti or Maltese, a Semitic language, written in a mainly
Latin alphabet with Arabic and Ramance influences. English is widely spoken across
the islands, with many young Maltese fluent.
