Holiday on Malta
We are going on a further fact finding / photography trip to Malta
as part of our winter travels, for a few weeks to end of March
2011
Malta - About the historically strategic, Southern European, Mediterranean
island(s) country known locally as Repubblika ta' Malta. The name Malta can be
traced back to the Phoenician word Maleth meaning "a haven".
Malta
became part of the British Empire in 1814.
Malta gained her independance from Britain in September 1964.
The Republic
of Malta - since 1974 - is an independant European state. After
independence from Great Britain Malta remained a member of the Commonwealth of
Nations (previously the British Commonwealth), becoming a democratic republic
in December of the same year and joining the European Union on Mayday 2004.
Malta
consists of three inhabited islands: Malta Island, Gozo
(Għawdex), Comino
(Kemmuna), and a further four uninhabited islands: · Cominotto
(Kemmunett), Delimara Island (Sikka ta' Delimara), Filfla, St
Paul's Island (Il-Gżejjer ta' San Pawl), Manoel Island (Il-Gżira
Manwel), Fungus Rock (Il-Ġebla tal-Ġeneral).
What is Malta's official language?
Having
its own official language Malti or Maltese, a Semitic language, written in a
mainly Latin alphabet with Arabic and Romance influences. English is widely spoken
across the islands, with many young Maltese fluent.
What is the population of Malta?
The island's total population including tourists is a lot less than 500,000
souls at any one time and although the de facto capital of Malta is Valletta
the largest city is Birkirkara or B'Kara in the centre of the main island. The
total land area of all the islands of Malta is just over 300 sq km or 120 sq
miles with very little fresh water sources.

The
Maltese currency is the Euro since 2008, previously the Maltese Lira, and it
is in the Central European Time Zone - two hours ahead of GMT. Flying time from
UK to Malta is around three and a half hours.

What is Malta's location?
Malta's exact location in the Mediterranean is deemed to be 35°53'N 14°30'E,
just over 90km or 58 miles to the south of Sicily and just under 290km or 180
miles north of the African coast, giving the islands a warm, maritime climate.
The Maltese islands have been shown to have first been settled in around 5200
BC by Stone Age farmers who had arrived from Sicily.

Malta has a history of occupation

Britain but going back into history other cultures have been here including Arabs,
Byzantines, Phoenicians, Romans, Sicilians and Spanish. Probably best known for
its occupation by Knights
of St. John during the Crusades and shipwreck of the Christian Saint,
St Paul.
