Holiday on Malta

We are going to Holiday on Malta as part of our winter travels, for six months between early October 2009 and end of March 2010

Malta - About the historically strategic, Southern European, Mediterranean island(s) country known locally as Repubblika ta' Malta. The name Malta can be traced back to the Phoenician word Maleth meaning "a haven".

Malta HolidayThe Republic of Malta is an independant European state since its independance from Great Britain in (September) 1974 although remaining a member of the Commonwealth of Nations (previously the British Commonwealth), becoming a democratic republic in December of the same year and joining the European Union on Mayday 2004. Malta consists of three inhabited islands and a further four uninhabited islands. Having its own official language Malti or Maltese, a Semitic language, written in a mainly Latin alphabet with Arabic and Ramance influences. English is widely spoken across the islands, with many young Maltese fluent.

The island's total population including tourists is a lot less than 500,000 souls at any one time and although the de facto capital of Malta is Valletta the largest city is Birkirkara or B'Kara in the centre of the main island. The total land area of all the islands of Malta is just over 300 sq km or 120 sq miles with very little fresh water sources.

The currency is the Euro since 2008, previously the Maltese Lira, and it is in the Central European Time Zone - two hours ahead of GMT. Flying time from UK to Malta is around three and a half hours.

The Internet top level domain names are .mt or .eu, along with other EU member states, and the international dialling code is +356

Malta's exact location in the Mediterranean is deemed to be 35°53'N 14°30'E, just over 90km or 58 miles to the south of Sicily and just under 290km or 180 miles north of the African coast, giving the islands a warm, maritime climate. The Maltese islands have been shown to have first been settled in around 5200 BC by Stone Age farmers who had arrived from Sicily

Malta has a history of occupation by other states, the latest being Britain but going back into history other cultures have been here including Arabs, Byzantines, Phoenicians, Romans, Sicilians and Spanish. Probably best known for its occupation by Knights of St. John during the Crusades and shipwreck of the Christian Saint, St Paul.
