The Old Prison - Graffiti On Cell Wall Entrance fee is applicable to this Heritage Malta museum. There is little to recommend visiting this historic site as it is only half a dozen nondescript prison cells. The Old Prison overlooks the Cathedral Square just inside the Citadel. The old prison's cells are conveniently located next to the Law Courts that are still operational today. The prison was in use from the mid-16th century up to the beginning of the 20th century. Soon after their arrival in Malta, the Knights of St John used this prison until they built a new one in 1548. The walls of the cells and corridors in the old prison have a good number of historical graffiti markings etched into the stonework from different periods showing outlines of hands, ships, crosses, names and dates, etc. There are recorded escapes from these prison cells both during the rule of the Knights of St John and the British Raj.
