Heritage Malta - Museum Site in Xaghra, Gozo - Ta' Kola WindmillWe visited Ta' Kola Windmill, Xaghra, Gozo, as part of our visit to Malta in 2011
Ta' Kola Windmill - A rectangular stone building with a circular stone windmill tower that was in working condition until 1987 - dating back to 1725 during the magistracy of Grand Master Manoel de Vilhena between 1722 and 1736 and was constructed by the Manoel Foundation. . Entrance fee is applicable to this Heritage Malta museum. The main features of the windmill are: the grinding mechanism, the workshop and living accommodation including kitchen, living room and bedrooms. The grinding mechanism is complete but the sails have been removed. The workshop was an essential part of the mill - the operation of the mill required the knowledge of several trades like carpentry, smithing and stone dressing as the milling mechanism was subject to high degrees of wear and tear!
