Heritage Malta - Museum Site in Vittoriosa - Inquisitors PalaceWe visited Inquisitors Palace, Vittoriosa, as part of our visit to Malta in 2011
The Inquisitors Palace - Courtyard Garden Entrance fee is applicable to this Heritage Malta museum. On Main Gate Street, Birgu (Vittoriosa) the Inquisitor's Palace is one of the very few surviving palaces of its kind which once could be found all over (Catholic) Europe. Originally built as the civil law courts in 1530's for the Order of St John and served as such until 1571 when the Order moved to Valletta. The palace was opened to the public in 1966 and converted to a museum focusing on religious values in the Maltese identity, especially as influenced by the Inquisition. Features include: The Chapel, Tribunal, Piano Nobile, Communal Cells, Prison Cells and Courtyard. The Tribunal was the most important room of the Inquisitor's Palace. It is where people were brought or presented themselves for trial after being reported, and where sentences were pronounced. The Inquisition did not involve indiscriminate torture!
