Malta - Senglea - L'Isla

Senglea - Maltese: L'Isla is a fortified city in the east of Malta

Mainly in the Grand Harbour area east of Valletta. Senglea / L-Isla is one of the 'Three Cities', with the other two being Cospicua and Vittoriosa.

The city of Senglea is also called Civitas Invicta (the invincible city), because it managed to resist the Ottoman invasion at the Great Siege of 1565. The proper name is Senglea since the grandmaster who built it Claude De La Sengle, gave this city a part of his name.

Senglea is home to the Church of Our Lady of Victory, known for its miraculous healings.

Vedette or Look Out Tower decorated with ears, eyes and a pelicanMost visitors to Malta will remember Senglea as the premonitory due south of Fort St Angelo in Valletta's Grand Harbour for its Vedette or Look Out Tower decorated with stone-carved ears, eyes and a pelican - the herald of Grandmaster Claude De La Sengle. This look out tower gives the sentry a great view over the Grand Harbour's defences.
