Malta - Sliema, Fort Tigne / Dragut PointWe saw Sliema, Fort Tigne / Dragut Point during our visit to Malta in 2011Dragut Point is the low laying promintory in the foreground - the 'pill box' shape (off centre left) is part of the old Fort Tigne
At the fringe end of the point is Fort Tigne, built in 1792 by the Knights, which stands next to an area redeveloped for the 21st century as a residential / shopping area of Sliema. The fort is is currently being restored as part of this redevelopment project. Fort Tigne became a centre of resistance and rebellion when Napoleon Bonaparte invaded the island in 1798. During British rule a military barracks was constructed at Tigne Point but when the British left in 1979 after Malta became an independent republic, the barracks fell into decay and neglect; hence the redevelopment.
