Malta - Wine - Winery - WineriesWe researched Maltese Wine and Wineries during our visit to Malta in 2011![]() Malta Wine Maltese Wineries and Wine Producers Production of wine has gone on in Malta for over two millennia. Improvements in Maltese wine making dates back to the time of Roman settlement on the Islands and was revived by the Knights of St John. With a Mediterranean climate of hot and dry summers and cool winters it is an ideal place to produce grapes that deliver ripe and full bodied wines. The home demand for Maltese wines is growing steadily, mainly through local hotel trade, as the product gets better and many labels sell out completely within a few months of bottling! To overcome the shortage of quality grapes on the islands of Malta and Gozo, some wineries import grapes from Italy and Greece, and sometimes blend the grapes with Maltese grown and sometimes make wines entirely from imported grapes, so you can never really be sure of the wine's provenance, unless it clearly states that the wine was produced entirely from grapes grown in Malt and Gozo. In 2007 the Maltese introduced a quality wine system known as Denominazzjoni ta’ Origini Kontrollata or D.O.K. Any Maltese wines from the 2007 harvest onwards that conform to the Q.W.P.S.R. (Quality Wine Produced in a Specific region) and pass the D.O.K. accreditation can display the words on the label Denominazzjoni ta’ Origini Kontrollata or the abbreviation D.O.K. In Malta there are five major wine producers. The two oldest, and largest, are Marsovin Limited and Emmanuel Delicata (Winemaker): Marsovin Ltd. is Malta's largest wine company, founded in 1919 and situated in Paola Emmanuel Delicata is Malta’s oldest family run winery producing the widest range of Malta grown wines with George Delicata leading the firm.
