Malta - Kalkara - Mill-Gir Ismin - Kalkara CreekWe visited Kalkara - Mill-Gir Ismin - Kalkara Creek during our visit to Malta in 2011Villa Bighi (centre) surrounded by Bighi Naval HospitalKalkara consists of two creeks that adjoin to the Grand Harbour of Valletta, Malta. These are respectively known as Rinella Creek (Rinella Bay) and Kalkara Creek. Kalkara is also formed from two peninsulas, today known as Ricasoli Point named after the knight Fra Giovanni Francesco Ricasoli who financed a large part of the fortifications project (Formerly Gallows Point); with the Mediterranean Sea coast to the north of the breakwater and Rinella Creek to the south. Ricasoli Point is home to Fort Ricasoli, and Bighi Point with Rinella Creek to the north and Kalkara Creek to the south; home to Bighi Naval Hospital, Villa Bighi and Kalkara Boatyard, respectively. Some historians believe that the land that today is known as Kalkara, was the first to be inhabited by the original inhabitants of Malta that arrived from the nearby island of Sicily. The idea behind this theory is that the previously mentioned creeks would have provided the primitive crafts of these emigrants with the first decent shelter after enduring heavy storms which at that time where present in the Mediterranean Sea.
