Malta, Mdina - Mdina; The Old Capital of Malta - "The Silent City" of Mdina

We visited Mdina as part of our visit to Malta in 2011

Originally a Phoenician town, Mdina was the original medieval walled old capital of Malta under the Knights of Malta up until 1571 - Sometimes known as 'The Silent City'.

The transfer time from Malta's International Airport to Mdina is around 40 minutes.

Mdina, a walled town and old capital of Malta, is perched on a plateau in the west of the central area of Malta.

The town of Mdina maintains an atmosphere you would imagine to be found in medieval times. With tight winding streets and stunning local architecture.

Mdina, Malta -with a population of around 500 residents, this walled city is ideal for exploring on foot or by pony and trap.

Mdina is a no-go area for non-resident cars!

Palazzo Falson Historic House Museum, Mdina, Malta - The walled town of Mdina, the old capital of Malta, is a fascinating place to take a stroll. Check out the spectacular Cathedral of St Paul and the Palazzo Falson, which displays the work of artist Olof Gollcher.

Other Mdina experience are:

Domus Romana - Just outside the main entrance to the Mdina this is one of Heritage Malta's archaeological sites - The remains of a Roman Villa consisting of the floor plan with near complete mosaic floor decoration. We would say that this small archaeological site would only appeal to academics.

National Museum of Natural History - One of Heritage Malta's Museums - The museum covers general global natural history subjects. There is little information specific to Malta's flora or fauna and if you have been to any good Natural History Museum then you can give this a miss.

The Mdina glassworks.

The Medieval Times, a guided-walk through 14th and 15th century life
with life-sized figures - An audio visual presentation in Mdina's oldest Palazzo. Resident weaver, lace maker, filigree craftsman and candle maker.

There is a 'Discover Mdina' Audio-tour Experience available (charges apply) from Vilhena Palace, St Publius Square, Mdina (just inside the main gate).

The Cathedral dedicated to the Conversion of Saint Paul, an artistic masterpiece in itself as well as a showcase of fine art.

The Cathedral Museum, housing treasures by, among other masters, Albrecht Durer and the Caravaggio

The Knights of Malta, another walk-through experience.

The Mdina Dungeons

The Mdina Experience, an audio-visual spectacle covering the city's history from the Roman era

The Mdina has various Palazzos, some purely of historic interest, like Palazzo Falzon, while others have been converted to provide food and beverage in an unrivalled ambience.
