Fishing Licences Malta - Malta fishing licences are required for fishing from a private boat in Maltese waters. Organised fishing trips by local charter fishing boats have you covered with their Malta commercial sport fishing licence.

What can I catch fishing from the sea shore in Malta?

Many locals choose to relax along the sea side in one of Malta's many sheltered bays or off the many piers along the shore line, where you can enjoy a few hours of light tackle fishing in Malta.

In Malta, there are many places where you can fish from sandy beaches for beach casting or a secluded bay for light ledgering.

Types of fish you can catch in Malta

Species: Mullet, Saddled Bream (Kahlija), Pandors (Pagella), Striped Sea Bream (Mingus).

Gilthead Sea Bream in Malta - The Gilt-head Bream or Porgie (the common name for any fish which belongs to the Sea Bream family Sparidae). Generally considered the best eating of all the breams. In Malta it is called "Awrata".

Mullet has served as an important source of food in Mediterranean EuropeMullet (pictured left) - Mullet has served as an important source of food in Mediterranean Europe since Roman times. The family includes about 80 species in 17 genera, although half of the species are in just two genera (Liza and Mugil).

Mullets are distinguished by the presence of two separate dorsal fins, small triangular mouths, and the absence of a lateral line organ. They feed on detritus, and most species have unusually muscular stomachs and a complex pharynx to help in digestion.

Malta Sea Fish

Dorado - Malta Sea FishThe costal Maltese waters host a large variety of fish and underwater fauna. When fishing from shore it is easy to catch various bottom dwelling species such as Bream, Conger, Mullet, Parrotfish and Wrasse to mention just a few. If you’re after the larger game fish like Albacore, Amberjack, Barracuda, Bonito, Dentex, Dorado, Grouper, Skipjack Tuna or Swordfish you’ll probably have to go offshore fishing, check out Malta offshore fishing charters.

A popular way of sea fishing around Malta's coasts is by ledgering in many of the harbour areas.

A soft to medium action telescopic casting rod fitted with a medium spinning reel filled up with 6kg (10lbs) breaking strain monofilament line is the ideal choice for light tackle fishing.

Bait is another essential part in order to get a few fish in your keep net. You can buy live rag worms in some places, this is probably the best Malta sea shore fishing bait choice, but if you can’t get hold of rag worms then shrimps, limpets, mussels or cockles will do the job well too!

Paste is another option and it’s a common bait when fishing with a pole rod for shoal fish such as Mullet. Laying ground baiting is a must, doing so will bring more fish in your fishing swim and hopefully in to your keep net.

Malta Fishing Charters

Malta is a new fishing charter destination, mainly unknown to sport fishing anglers.

Barracuda fishing MaltaThe deep blue Maltese waters offer up good fishing all the year round for classic fighting sport fish like Albacore, Barracuda, Blue Fin Tuna, Dorado, Swordfish, and bottom feeder fishing for Grouper, Jewfish, Snapper etc.

Depending on your level of experience and how long you would like to stay out at sea, there are two types of fishing trips available – offshore and coastal.
